UPSC Maths Problems Challenge : A Problem A Day! (Day 10)

Today is the 10th day of this challenge and I myself feel quite excited as I write this post.It feels wondrous how Maths can help in elevating your mood! Today's problem is a problem on Physics-based Algebra.to be specific the very relevant speed,time and distance concept.The syllabus of Class X Science (often denoted as General Science in the guidelines of all the exams conducted by UPSC for administrative posts) is really necessary for preparation for the same.I hope this helps since such problems are of the kind you can solve in half a minute if you are well aware of the strategy but may end spending a lot of time if you get confused due to lack of strategy.

Running at a speed of 60 km per hour, a train passed through a 1.5 km long tunnel in two minutes. What is the length of the train? [UPSC 2010 (CS-P)]
1) 250 m
2) 500 m
3) 1000 m
4) 1500 m


We know that distance = speed * time [Written s = v * t]. 
Now,total distance travelled = (1.5 + x) km where speed = 60 km/hr and time = 2 minutes.
2 minutes = (2/60) hour = (1/30) hour.
Therefore, 1.5 + x = 60 * 1/30 = 2
⇒ x = 2 - 1.5 = 0.5 km = (0.5 * 1000) m = 500 m.
So,the length of the train is 500 m.
