Cuando el 15 de septiembre de 1936 en el discurso de la conmemoración de la Independencia mexicana del Imperio Español el presidente Lázaro Cárdenas gritó un «Viva la República Española», manifestó con una claridad absoluta el apoyo incondicional del gobierno mexicano a la II República española. De hecho, ningún otro gabinete mexicano reconocería ya nunca al gobierno del general Franco.

Las simpatías entre el gobierno mexicano y el español eran patentes. Tras la proclamación del 14 de abril de 1931, recibida con gran júbilo en México, ambos gobiernos decidieron establecer las correspondientes embajadas. Después del golpe de estado del 18 de julio de 1936, México no dudó en remitir al gobiero republicano español un mensaje de adhesión y cuando estalló la Guerra se estrecharon aún más los vínculos entre ambos gobiernos.
