A year ago, activist-journalist Gauri Lankesh was shot in front of her own residence. It was a pre-planned murder and we most certainly knew who the victims were. Despite Indrajit Lankesh (who happens to be Gauri's brother) stating in front of the media that the murder might have been the result of personal enmity, noted film director, critique and Gauri's sister Kavitha Lankesh had always been outspoken as to what the political motives behind the murder might have been. On 9th September this year, the last of the 17 accused for the murder has been arrested. Last week, during my stay in Bangalore, we had a conversation for the second time regarding how amnestic the state machinery have been driving us, and how the intensity of such brutality should continue to remind us of the eternal disorders we carry on the inside.
Last year during the interview, all of us were still in shock. This year, things were a little better and we managed to laugh every time the rationality and Hindu orthodoxy binary came up in the conversation! Since the first interview had been published in Youth ki Awaaz, it will be them who would be publishing the second one, in continuation to the first. It should be out by today and I will be posting the details soon on the blog.
Let us carry the legacy as far as we can afford to.
