Stills from 'La Jetee' (1962) ~ Directed by Chris Marker

Chris Marker's work is simply fascinating. A cult figure in experimental cinema, he blends a pungent Godardian essence with a style that is essentially his own. His obsession with time coincides with a quest I have wanted to take part in ever since I was a child. And his obsession, is visibly fearless. With strong cuts, bold transitions, and poetry that is both visual and magnificent literary work, he manages to draw out what cinema can do at its best - take you through a tunnel that only you would be able to share with the one who made it. There might be co-passengers along the way, one or two of them...but this journey is personal. And it will change you, in one way or the other, in ways that are subconscious or perhaps more consciously felt. One of those early wonders that happened in the field of science fiction, 'La Jetée' is imaginative, and so is Chris Marker. And it drips through the visual poetry he creates like downpour in the months of fall.
