TOP 10 UNDERRATED SONGS BY PINK FLOYD

Almost everybody in the crowd seem to be intrigued and delighted by 'Comfortably Numb','Time' or 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'.But there is a Pink Floyd beyond this and there are several songs that are beautiful enough but immensely underrated at the same time.Today,I am compiling my Top 10 of the underrated songs from Pink Floyd.

1.Green Is The Colour

Lyrics

Heavy hung the canopy of blue
Shade in my eyes and I can see you
White was  the light that shined through the dress that you wore

She lay in the shadow of the wave
Hazy were the visions of her playing
Sunshine in her eyes but moonshine made her cry (blind in the BBC version) ev'ry time

Green is the colour of her kind
Quickness of the eye deceives the mind
Envy is the bond between the hopeful and the damned

Green Is The Colour by Pink Floyd

A very beautiful but unfortunately underrated song by Pink Floyd. The lyrics is written by Roger Waters and is a solo performance by David Gilmour. The combination is needless to say, amazing and the song is a very soft, acoustic and piano based, extremely melodious, romantic piece of work by Pink Floyd.I have reviewed this a few days ago here.

2.The Final Cut

Lyrics

Through the fish-eyed lens of tear stained eyes
I can barely define the shape of this moment in time
And far from flying high in clear blue skies
I'm spiralling down to the hole in the ground where I hide.

If you negotiate the minefield in the drive
And beat the dogs and cheat the cold electronic eyes
And if you make it past the shotgun to my hall,
Dial the combination, open the priesthole
And if I'm in I'll tell you what's behind the wall.

There's a kid who had a big hallucination
Making love to girls in magazines.
He wonders if you're sleeping with your new found faith.
Could anybody love him
Or is it just a crazy dream?

And if I show you my dark side
Will you still hold me tonight?
And if I open my heart to you
And show you my weak side
What would you do?
Would you sell your story to Rolling Stone?
Would you take the children away
And leave me alone?
And smile in reassurance
As you whisper down the phone?
Would you send me packing?
Or would you take me home?

Thought I oughta bare my naked feelings,
Thought I oughta tear the curtain down.
I held the blade in trembling hands
Prepared to make it but just then the phone rang
I never had the nerve to make the final cut.

"Hello? Listen, I think I've got it. Okay, listen its a HaHa!"

The Final Cut by Pink Floyd

A very bold performance by Roger Waters. The 'drama within music' concept is impressive enough and you would perhaps listen to this many a times more if you listen to it once, the song has got the addictive attribute. One of the favourite songs from Pink Floyd and a very nice combination of Hard Rock and Indie Rock in one song.I have reviewed it before here.

3.The Gunner's Dream

Lyrics

Floating down through the clouds
Memories come rushing up to meet me now.
In the space between the heavens
and in the corner of some foreign field
I had a dream.
I had a dream.
Good-bye Max.
Good-bye Ma.
After the service when you're walking slowly to the car
And the silver in her hair shines in the cold November air
You hear the tolling bell
And touch the silk in your lapel
And as the tear drops rise to meet the comfort of the band
You take her frail hand
And hold on to the dream.
A place to stay
"Oi! A real one ..."
Enough to eat
Somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street
Where you can speak out loud
About your doubts and fears
And what's more no-one ever disappears
You never hear their standard issue kicking in your door.
You can relax on both sides of the tracks
And maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control
And everyone has recourse to the law
And no-one kills the children anymore.
And no one kills the children anymore.

Night after night
Going round and round my brain
His dream is driving me insane.
In the corner of some foreign field
The gunner sleeps tonight.
What's done is done.
We cannot just write off his final scene.
Take heed of his dream.
Take heed.

The Gunner's Dream (The Final Cut) by Pink Floyd

The song is intricately related to the political philosophy of how soldiers are forced to live in the terrible and hellish conditions even when they do not have the intention to do what 'the great dictators' instruct to them.I was very emotionally moved when I head the song properly for the first time and it continues to be one of my most favourite songs from Pink Floyd. The song is reviewed here.

4.Us and Them

Lyrics

Us, and them
And after all we're only ordinary men.
Me, and you.
God only knows it's noz what we would choose to do.
Forward he cried from the rear
and the front rank died.
And the general sat and the lines on the map
moved from side to side.
Black and blue
And who knows which is which and who is who.
Up and down.
But in the end it's only round and round.
Haven't you heard it's a battle of words
The poster bearer cried.
Listen son, said the man with the gun
There's room for you inside.

"I mean, they're not gunna kill ya, so if you give 'em a quick short,
sharp, shock, they won't do it again. Dig it? I mean he get off
lightly, 'cos I would've given him a thrashing - I only hit him once!
It was only a difference of opinion, but really...I mean good manners
don't cost nothing do they, eh?"

Down and out
It can't be helped but there's a lot of it about.
With, without.
And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about?
Out of the way, it's a busy day
I've got things on my mind.
For the want of the price of tea and a slice
The old man died.

Us And Them by Pink Floyd

I have featured this song in both Top 10 Songs from The Wall  and The Top 10 Pink Floyd Songs.
The song brings out the inner conscience and that is what a song can do at its best. One of the first songs I listened to when I started listening to Pink Floyd,I have listened to this song for several times later and each time rediscovered the truth of it.The hard and symphonic rock is well performed by Gilmour and the song is very boldly beautiful but underrated.

5.Stop

Lyrics

Stop!
I wanna go home
Take off this uniform
And leave the show.
But I'm waiting in this cell
Because I have to know.
Have I been guilty all this time?

Stop (The Wall) by Pink Floyd

This song is a 00:30 piece from The Wall but in the few lines it is comprised of,it creates a realm of helplessness, conscience and philosophy that perhaps cannot be expressed by writing a novel sometimes.I absolutely love this song and have listed it as the first song in Top 10 Songs From The Wall.

6.One Of My Turns

Lyrics

"Oh my God! What a fabulous room! Are all these your guitars?
[Film in background: "I'm sorry sir, I didn't mean to startle you!]
"This place is bigger than our apartment!
[Film: "Let me know when you're entering a room"
"Yes sir!"]
"erm, Can I get a drink of water?
[Film: "I was wondering about ..."]
"You want some, huh?"
[Film: "Yes"]
"Oh wow, look at this tub? Do you wanna take baaaath?"
[Film: "I'll have to find out from Mrs. Bancroft what time she wants to meet us, for her main ..."]
"What are watching?"
[Film: "If you'll just let me know as soon as you can ... Mrs Bancroft" "Mrs Bancroft ..."]
"Hello?"
[Film: "I don't understand ..."]
"Are you feeling okay?..."

Day after day, love turns grey
Like the skin of a dying man.
Night after night, we pretend its all right
But I have grown older and
You have grown colder and
Nothing is very much fun any more.
And I can feel one of my turns coming on.
I feel cold as a razor blade,
Tight as a tourniquet,
Dry as a funeral drum.

Run to the bedroom,
In the suitcase on the left
You'll find my favorite axe.
Don't look so frightened
This is just a passing phase,
One of my bad days.
Would you like to watch T.V.?
Or get between the sheets?
Or contemplate the silent freeway?
Would you like something to eat?
Would you like to learn to fly?
Would'ya?
Would you like to see me try?

Would you like to call the cops?
Do you think it's time I stopped?
Why are you running away?

One Of My Turns (The Wall) by Pink Floyd

If you are a hard rock fan,you will have to listen to One Of My Turns.Even if you ignore the lyrics, you will enjoy the tune, the drums and the high pitch in which it is sung. The lyrics are not very well written as they normally are but it expresses what it needs to and Waters has done a good job with the overall performance as well.I liked this so much that I even created a YouTube Video for this that you can watch here.

8.A Pillow Of Winds

Lyrics

A cloud of eiderdown
Draws around me
Softening a sound.
Sleepy time, and I lie,
With my love by my side,
And she's breathing low.

And the candle dies.

When night comes down
You lock the door.
The book falls to the floor.
As darkness falls
The waves roll by,
The seasons change
The wind is wry.

Now wakes the hour
Now sleeps the swan
Behold the dream
The dream is gone.
Green fields are calling
It's falling, in a golden door.

And deep beneath the ground,
The early morning sounds
And I go down.
Sleepy time, and I lie,
With my love by my side,
And she's breathing low.

And I rise, like a bird,
In the haze, when the first rays
Touch the sky.

And the night wings die.

A Pillow of Winds (Meddle) by Pink Floyd

A soft, acoustic based, love song that I have reviewed here. The song has enough psychedelia and fans of alternative genres such as Progressive Rock or pure Psychedelic Rock are going to love this. The instrumentals are very impressive as well. The song is highly underrated, though.

9.Goodbye Blue Sky

Lyrics

Look, Mummy. There's an airplane up in the sky.

Oooooooo ooo ooo ooooh
Did you see the frightened ones
Did you hear the falling bombs
Did you ever wonder
Why we had to run for shelter
When the promise of a brave new world
Unfurled beneath a clear blue sky
Oooooooo ooo ooooo oooh
Did you see the frightened ones
Did you hear the falling bombs
The flames are all long gone
But the pain lingers on
Goodbye blue sky
Goodbye blue sky
Goodbye
Goodbye

Goodbye Blue Sky (The Wall) by Pink Floyd

I have enlisted this song in Top 10 Songs From The Wall and the song begins with a child's voice saying - "Look Mommy, there's an airplane up in sky",where actually war planes arrive for bombing and the song relates to the Blitz and how the German forces dropped bombs on England during the Second World War.There is both mysticism and innocence in the voice as the child says 'sky' and the song is impressive and bold.(I am not talking about politics but a war that took lives.)I don't know why or how this song can be underrated.

10.A Great Day For Freedom

Lyrics

On the day the wall came down
They threw the locks onto the ground
And with glasses high we raised a cry for freedom had arrived

On the day the wall came down
The Ship of Fools had finally run aground
Promises lit up the night like paper doves in flight

I dreamed you had left my side
No warmth, not even pride remained
And even though you needed me
It was clear that I could not do a thing for you

Now life devalues day by day
As friends and neighbours turn away
And there's a change that, even with regret, cannot be undone

Now frontiers shift like desert sands
While nations wash their bloodied hands
Of loyalty, of history, in shades of grey

I woke to the sound of drums
The music played, the morning sun streamed in
I turned and I looked at you
And all but the bitter residues slipped away... slipped away

A Great Day For Freedom (Obscured By Clouds) by Pink Floyd

A Great Day For Freedom (Obscured By Clouds) by Pink Floyd

I have enlisted this song in Top 10 Pink Floyd Songs compilation. This is a seriously underrated song by Pink Floyd and people hardly know about it,though there is no question that the song is beautiful. The lyrics, the melody, the voice behind and the philosophy is all perfect. The instrumentals are also very perfect.
